Additional information

A very fine quality ceremonial canopy for a tent ceiling from western Rajasthan and the Saurashtra region of Gujrat in India from the 1950s.
Applique patchwork and very fine hand embroidery with silk thread and mirror work on cotton fabric made by professional Oswal Baniya community for Kathi landlords. These canopies were mainly used on special occasions like marriage or festival.  It is rare to find such big pieces like this these days.

The Oswal Banias of western Rajasthan and the Wagad tract of Kutch made large wedding canopies in applique. They came in panels of six, nine, or twelve and more squares.
Most of these squares are decorated by means of “snow-flake” patterns in white, applied to a brightly colored background.

Due to being a vintage piece of more than 70 years and likely many celebrations, this canopy has some marks and wear.
