About this journey
A trading fair older than the road that reaches it.
Four days at the livestock fair that fills the dunes outside Pushkar each November. It is a working market first and a spectacle second: breeders arrive on foot with camels and horses, camps go up across the sand, and by the full moon the town has swollen many times over. We spend the mornings in the trading grounds, the afternoons with Rajasthani textile printers and dyers whose work is sold here, and the evenings in the camps.
Why now
November — the days around Kartik Purnima — and not the rest of the year
The fair is fixed to Kartik Purnima and lasts a matter of days. Outside that window Pushkar is a small lakeside pilgrimage town of a few thousand people, and the dunes are empty sand. The traders will have walked home. There is no version of this to see in February.

Ratan Singh Rathore
Livestock breeder's son; twenty-two fairs attended
Ratan grew up bringing animals to this fair and now works between the breeders and the visitors who come to watch them. He can tell you what a camel is actually worth, which is a more useful education than any amount of photography.

This is people's livelihood, not a set. Ask before photographing traders and their animals, do not obstruct a negotiation, and treat the bathing ghats as the religious site they are.
