About this journey
A salt flat that only exists for part of the year, and the finest embroidery in India at its edge.
Four days across Kutch, timed to a full moon. The Great Rann is a seasonal salt desert — underwater in the monsoon, a white crust by winter — and on a full-moon night it is bright enough to walk on without a torch. Around it sit the embroidery villages: Ahir, Rabari, Jat and Mutwa work, each a distinct hand, each still stitched by women in their own homes. We spend the days in the villages and the nights on the salt.
Why now
November — February, on the full-moon nights — and not the rest of the year
Both halves of this depend on the season. The Rann is impassable water for months and only dries to a walkable crust in winter, and the full moon is what makes a night on it worth having. The embroiderers, meanwhile, work to the wedding season, so this is when the best pieces are on the frame rather than already gone.

Embroiderer and cooperative organiser, Bhuj
Hansiba stitches Rabari work and helps run a cooperative of over two hundred women. She can identify a village, and often a family, from a few centimetres of a border — and will show you how, which is the part visitors remember.
