The Marotia family practises the Jaipur School of Miniature Painting, known for its intricate detailing, delicate brushwork, vibrant colours, fine ornamentation and its depiction of royal, historical and cultural themes. The family works with colours prepared from natural stones, handmade paper and traditional gold and silver ornament, and paints Rajasthani art: miniatures, watercolour paintings, wall hangings, home décor, and art and collectibles in the traditional Indian manner.
The family has been associated with miniature painting for six generations. Nathu Lal Marotia was a royal artist of Jaipur; his sons Babu Lal and Hari Narayan Marotia are National Award winners, and Badri Narayan Marotia is a National Awardee in glass-studded painting. Today Vinit Kumar Marotia, the sixth generation, is teaching miniature painting to his son, so that the knowledge and techniques passed down through the generations remain alive.
Since 1997 members of the family have been invited to demonstrate traditional miniature painting at the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum in the City Palace, Jaipur, introducing visitors from India and around the world to this heritage art. Every year, from 21 May to 21 June, the family teaches students at a month-long summer camp in the City Palace — anyone may join, with registration on the same day at the City Palace.
